Last week, we asked the Robokids community a simple question:
If your child could design a robot to help Australia’s future, what would it do?
The responses explored challenges such as protecting wildlife, removing rubbish, improving farming and helping people experiencing loneliness.
Some ideas were practical. Others were ambitious, surprising or wonderfully unconventional. But their value wasn’t determined by whether the robots could be built tomorrow. What mattered was the thinking behind them.
Children were noticing problems, imagining alternatives and considering how technology could help people, animals and the environment. These are the first steps towards innovation.
Before children can build the future, they need permission to imagine one that doesn’t exist yet.
Children begin with possibility
When adults hear a new idea, we often begin with the limitations. How much would it cost? Is the technology available? Would it be too difficult?
These questions are important, but they aren’t always the best place to begin.
Children often start with the outcome they want. They might imagine a robot that protects marine animals, removes rubbish from hard-to-reach places or keeps someone company when they feel alone.
This freedom allows children to explore possibilities that adults may dismiss too quickly.
A wild idea can also contain some very serious thinking. A shark-protecting robot raises questions about marine ecosystems, animal behaviour, sensors and ethics. How could it help without disturbing the animals?
A robot designed to address loneliness invites children to think about empathy, communication and community. Should it talk, listen or help someone connect with family and friends?
An idea doesn’t need to be immediately achievable to begin a valuable conversation.
Creativity and technology belong together
Robotics is sometimes seen as a purely technical activity involving components, motors and code.
These skills matter, but they are only part of the picture.
Before anyone builds a robot, they must decide what it should do and why it should exist. Who will it help? What problem will it address? What could happen if it makes a mistake?
These questions require creativity, curiosity, communication and empathy alongside technical knowledge.
When children imagine a robot, draw a design or explain how it works, they are learning to observe the world, develop an idea and communicate it clearly. When they build a prototype, they also learn to test, make changes and try again.
Helping children think like inventors
Parents don’t need specialist equipment or technical knowledge to encourage inventive thinking. A conversation and a piece of paper are enough.
Instead of asking whether an idea is realistic, try asking:
- What problem have you noticed?
- Who or what would your invention help?
- What would your robot need to sense?
- What could go wrong?
- How would you make it safe?
- What would the first simple version look like?
The goal isn’t to create a perfect design. It is to give the idea space to develop.
A message from Australia in 2046
This week, we’re inviting families to imagine Australia 20 years from now.
Ask your child to complete this message:
“Thank you to the young inventors of 2026 for creating…”
Perhaps their invention protected the Great Barrier Reef, reduced waste, transformed farming or solved a problem nobody else had noticed.
